It’s a wonderful thing to watch an artist grow, especially when you love how they’ve grown. In the spring of 2010, SiairaShawn dropped The In Between EP. Throughout the years she’s experimented with her sound a bit, but always provided content that was left of traditional R&B and an honest reflection of the many stages of romantic relationships.
Her modus operandi is the same on Ghost. In the title track, she sings about trying to make a relationship work with a partner who is still haunted by the ghosts of a past relationship. “Can we last if you can’t let go of your last?” she questions. In “Interlude,” she faces the end of a romance noting, “we have too much history to let it end like this.” It’s easy to believe that Siaira is singing the notes that she’s written in current and previous letters, if not diary entries.
The seven-track project was cooked up in Brooklyn and features production that fits Siaira’s vocals and lyrics perfectly. SiairaShawn is in her groove. As a fan, you also realize that the “new” or alternative R&B that people are being put onto is something that this Bay Area native has been on.
