It’s Thursday morning. You’ve probably realized that the weekend is almost here. You’ve probably got a list of things you’re trying to get into come 5pm on Friday. So, what is this Hookup Lounge? Glad you asked. The Hookup Lounge is a monthly mixer at Feelmore510, a sex-positve adult novelty store/art gallery/gathering space in Oakland. Every first Thursday, stroll in, grab a piece of string (or not) and get to mingling. You’ll be greeted by the awesome owner, Nenna. She’ll help you choose the string and even introduce you to other participants.
See the pic above? Those are your options. It’s like a stoplight party but not. The newly single folks are a bit of a red flag and you also have the option of identifying as Poly….We had to ask why.
38th Notes: Why was it important for you to include Poly as an option?
Nenna: I have a few friends that participate in open relationships as well as people coming into Feelmore510 to buy books and/or ask questions about the topic. Including Poly is not to say that it solves all problems that many think comes along with some monogamous relationships but it helps to know your options. Poly just gives people the opportunity to date, openly, multiple people at any given time. It’s not simply about sexual relationships as it is about spending your time with whom you want at any given time. So, this new talked about but ancient relationship practice can help individuals add to their level of understanding of relationships if not for their own use but understanding of another lifestyle choice. So, it will just serve to educate and create dialog just as the ‘Red String’.
38th Notes: Why is newly single a red flag?
Nenna: The ‘Red flag’; I mean ‘String’ is important because some are still dealing with a new level of feelings around old relationships. Maybe they haven’t picked up that last pair of shorts, removed the old scents, old behaviors, or even changed their ‘Facebook’ status, so you really want to let folks know before they invest time if at all with you. And, it could be drama for the new person and they should at least know the potential for ‘extra’. This also gives people an opportunity to have dialog about where they are, ‘Newly Single’, without having to mention it. This could lead to more or less dialog as they may find someone wants to know how they are coping with the relationship transition.
Now that you know what The Hookup Lounge is, all you have to worry about is getting there. Feelmore510 is located at 1703 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland. The event is from 8-10pm and there are plenty of bars to hit afterward.
