When I found out that Zakiya Harris would be releasing an EP called Adventures of a Shapeshifter, I was intrigued.

I don’t have many friends with one job. Even the ones who have a main hustle have a multitude of passion projects and interests they are exploring all at once. We’re a bunch of creatives and entrepreneurs moving in and out of diverse spaces.

Surely, Harris –who is one for the founders of Hub Oakland, co-director of Hack the Hood, and a diversity outreach strategist for several national brands, a dancer and a songstress – would have a whole lot of shape-shifting to talk about.

On the EP you get a bit of that. But you also get that sense that shape-shifting is not just about being able to play all of your roles. Sometimes it’s about being able to adapt to the emotional curve balls that life tends to throw. “Can’t Be Your Girl,” is an upbeat track about lost love; “You were my world, I can’t be your girl” she croons and questions how it’s possible to transform from being so deeply in love to being so distant.

Right now she has three of her tracks available online. Saturday, she’ll debut the full EP at Awaken Café alongside her group The Elephantine. The show costs $10 and features performances from Antique Naked Soul and Miss Kia. Swing through.
