“Now I’m drivin’ up the 5 and she waits till I arrive in Oakland, in Oakland.”
It was a late night discovery. A Childish Gambino song by the name of “Telegraph Ave” was posted on DJ Platurn’s facebook page affixed with a description that read, “random.” That pretty much sums it up. And yet, it’s actually good!
The song’s bubbling synths underlay Drake-esque rap-singing similar to the hook of Gambino’s recently released track “3005.” His embrace of this syrupy pop-rap sound is surprising given his typically brash and punchline-obsessed delivery, but perhaps even more surprising is the Stone Mountain, GA’s affinity for a young woman in Oakland, CA. I mean, you can’t really blame him for digging Oakland women, but he’s downright smitten–going as far as to say:
“And I’m nervous, truth be told
I never saw me growing old
In Oakland, in Oakland
And if I married you tonight
It would probably start a riot
In Oakland, in Oakland”
He goes onto say that he’ll move his furniture to a city in which he knows no one else just to be with her. That is some real Drake ass shit to say.
“Telegraph Ave (‘Oakland’ by Lloyd)” is on Childish Gambino’s new album Because the Internet dropping 12.10.13.
While we wait to see if Donald Glover’s Oakland fantasy comes true, can someone please head over to OaklandGirl.com and tell my homegirl Mikele that Gambino needs this t-shirt with the hurryupness!?
