“Play,” is pure seduction. Goapele’s new single features production that makes you want to dip, sway and grind with lyrics that just might push you to do a bit more. On the track, the Bay Area singer confesses that she is ready for a lover’s session sans rules and questions if her suitor is up for the challenge. She sings like a woman completely aware and comfortable with her sexuality. For folks who are more familiar with her debut work, the take-charge/you-can-get-it approach may come as bit of a shocker, but this new sound is a long time in the making.

In 2009 Goapele released “Milk & Honey” and folks buzzed about a sexier side of the songstress. New music shared exclusively with her audience during live shows at Yoshi’s and a few outdoor concerts revealed that while her flavor was a bit more sensual, she wasn’t out to sell sex. She was out to give a more complete and complex look at love and life through her eyes. Conversations with reporters revealed a woman who was tired of hiding layers of herself in order to avoid looking like a manufactured and over-sexed music industry byproduct. Now that Goapele is ready to come out and play, you get a new song that is worthy of your baby-making playlist, without the raunch, with a vibe that’s liberated enough to make you try something new in the bedroom– or elsewhere.

Check out her stark and seductive video for “Play” below. The bold black and white aesthetics are reminiscent of Jay-Z’s “On To The Next One,” that is if the Illuminati imagery were replaced with game night sleepover suggestiveness.
